Shamanism is mankind’s most ancient healing art. In Shamanic healing
for animals, the healer enters hidden worlds (called “non-ordinary
reality”) and requests the help of compassionate spirit allies to
learn what is wrong with an animal, get information that will help the
caregivers, and ultimately to heal the animal’s troubles, be they
emotional or physical.
Over tens of thousands of years, our ancient ancestors all over
the world discovered how to maximize human abilities of mind and spirit
for healing and problem solving. The remarkable system of methods they
developed is today known as “shamanism,” a term that comes
from a Siberian tribal word for its practitioners: “shaman”
(pronounced SHAH-mahn). A Shaman is a type of medicine man or woman
especially distinguished by the use of journeys to hidden worlds otherwise
mainly known through myth, dream, and near-death experiences. Most commonly
they do this by entering an altered state of consciousness using monotonous
percussion sound. (Copyright: Foundation for Shaman Studies)
Anthropologists point out that Shamans were the members of the tribes
who could talk to animals, and indeed the Shamanic State of Consciousness
is an ideal state of mind for animal communication. The Shaman must engage
the client in conversation to gain direct permission for healing. It is
a matter of intention then to merge with the animal, experience life from
the animal’s senses and understand the animal’s point of view.
A Shamanic healer may work at a distance or in direct physical contact
with the animal. Either way, the spirit allies and the Shaman first gain
the permission of the animal’s spirit before engaging in work. They
then inspect the animal for spiritual causes of illness, remove them,
and retrieve spiritual power for the animal to help it become whole and
healthy again. The spirits also give the caregivers practical advice on
next steps they can take to help the animal. Shamanic healers always work
in conjunction with wise and compassionate spiritual allies, doing what
is best for the animal and the caregiver. They heal the heart between
the person and the animal, a critical step in recovery for both beings.
In this partnership the Shaman’s personal point of view is subjugated
to the information given by spirits, and the healing power that comes
through is a transmission from these distinct and wise beings.
